Trailers/audio

I’m not sure if trailers or readings do much to promote books but they’re fun to make and record.

The first trailer I made was for The Darkness, a book which lends itself to a sinister sort of treatment. The trailer was voted the most intriguing one in the New Covey Awards. And the book won silver in the Mystery category of the Forward National Literature Awards.

Next, the opening couple of pages of The Sparrow Conundrum, winner of the Humor category in the Forward National Literature Awards 2011 and of the Readers Choice Award for Humor and Satire at Big Al’s Books & Pals 2012.

The opening of Alternative Dimension, a satirical novella about online role-playing games and the pleasures and dangers of living a fantasy.

An extract from Unsafe Acts, in which Jack Carston and Jim Ross interview Rick Bole, an offshore oil worker who ‘enjoyed’ a night’s gay-bashing in which one man was blinded and another was killed. But Bole’s lawyer has coached him well.

A story written for R B Wood’s The Word Count Podcast. It imagines an evening spent with a favourite fictional character.

Dr Christie and the consequences of the charge of sexual harassment against him.

The hospital death which starts everything in Shadow Selves

From the most recent Jack Carston mystery, Unsafe Acts, a typical scene of the domestic Carston , at home with his wife Kath.

An extract from The Sparrow Conundrum – the first meeting between Lodgedale, the sociopathic policeman, and the story’s ‘hero’, Chris Machin.

In The Darkness, many scenes take place in a cellar, where 4 men are chained to pillars. Here, the person responsible begins to tell them why they’re there.

In this extract, he makes his confession to them – and to himself.

This is a pivotal scene in The Figurehead. John Grant and Elizabeth Anderson are both intrigued by the death of a shipwright. They are also attracted to one another. Helen is determined to show John that his investigation of the death is too narrow.
